The Greene County Historical Society’s spelling bee wasn’t the biggest spelling bee ever, but it was an entertaining part of the Bell Tower Big Top Saturday afternoon at the Greene County Community Center.
Samuel Derry placed first among first and second graders, with Quentin Soucy in second place. Gavin Vander Linden placed first among third and fourth graders, with Adam Sloan in second place. Among fifth through eighth graders, Hannah Sloan placed first and Arthur Bardole placed second.
Rachel Sloan placed first in the high school division. Paul Soucy placed first among adults and Tracy Lucht placed second.
All first and second place winners received dated trophies.

Chair of the spelling bee was Marilynn Hoskinson. Judges were retired teachers Joan Conroy, Jean Van Gilder and Shirley Stapleton.
Pronouncer was Andrew McGinn. He kept not only the spellers on their toes, but the judges, too, as he skipped around on the list rather than reading the words from the Scripps list in order.
